After two micro-publishing houses, your Saint/editor gives you the words of Marina Legaki and Tasos Gaintatzis, hellenic founders of OMMU Distribution: bookshop, distributor and promoter of the independent publishing culture in Athens, Greece and around Europe, thanks to their assiduous presence at festivals and their temporary bookstores.

When did you start with OMMU and do you remember exactly where you were the moment you said: «why don’t we start a distro?»? In 2009 we organized a pop-up shop in a gallery here in Athens, where we invited friends and colleagues that we had met, publishers, artists and book-makers to send us their publications. It was the first time they appeared in Athens, and the feedback was very positive! It was very essential for us to introduce all the things we loved and collected ourselves here, in selected spaces in Greece.
Quando avete iniziato a lavorare ad OMMU e vi ricordate dove eravate nel momento esatto in cui avete detto: «Perché non apriamo un distro?»? Nel 2009 organizzamo un pop-up shop in una galleria di Atene ed invitammo amici, colleghi, editori, artisti e book-makers ad inviarci le loro pubblicazioni. Era la prima volta che apparivano ad Atene e il feedback fu molto positivo! È stato essenziale introdurre tutte le cose che amiamo e collezioniamo in alcuni spazi selezionati in Grecia.
What does OMMU mean? Nothing! We invented it, as we liked the way it sounds!

What is the publication or publishing house to which you are most affected affectionate? One of our first influences and inspirations was RE/Search magazine, run by V. Vale since the 1980s, a magazine oriented to counter-culture topics related to aesthetics, technology, the paranormal & industrial music amongst others.
Qual è la pubblicazione o la casa editrice alla quale siete più affezionati? Una delle prime influenze e ispirazioni è RE/Search magazine, portato avanti da V.Vale dagli anni ’80, una rivista orientata su argomenti di cultura generale legati all’estetica, alla tecnologia, al paranormale, all’industria musicale e non solo.
Last year OMMU opened a temporary bookstore in Rome, but just for one week, why did you choose our city? We met up with friends associated with NERO magazine at this year’s Venice Biennale and arranged to do it in Rome. It came naturally over dinner, while eating giant pizzas in a crowded square!
Lo scorso anno OMMU ha aperto un temporary store a Roma, solo per una settimana, perché avete scelto la nostra città? Ci siamo incontrati con degli amici legati a NERO magazine durante la Biennale d’Arte a Venezia e abbiamo deciso di portare OMMU a Roma. È nato naturalmente durante una cena di fronte a pizze giganti in una piazza molto chiassosa!
During our history our history paper is always been a vehicle to talk to the mass, do you believe in paper power? How should it be used by future generations? We believe in paper power, paper can be utilized to transfer information using its own special characteristics. It has a variable shape, weight, smell, touch, and takes up some space. This physicality is what we love, as much as we love owning a collection of digital archives, pdfs we’ve downloaded and stored.
Durante la nostra storia, la carta è sempre stata un veicolo per parlare alle masse, credete nel potere della carta? Come dovrebbe essere sfruttato dalle generazioni future? Sì, crediamo nel potere della carta. La carta può essere utilizzata per trasferire informazioni usando le sue particolari caratteristiche. Ha una forma variabile, un peso, un odore, un tatto e occupa spazio. Amiamo questa sua fisicità, così come amiamo avere una collezione di archivi digitali, pdf che abbiamo scaricato e messo al sicuro.
Which is the most interesting European country regarding self-publishing production? We see production coming from all over! Our main focus & country of choice is the U.S. as far as our personal interests are involved, but since we’ll have to mention a European one, we’ll say Switzerland is the one we love the most in terms of design & publishing production.
Qual è per voi il paese, in Europa, più interessante rispetto al mondo dell’editoria indipendente? Vediamo produzioni che vengono da tutto il mondo! La nostra principale fonte di materiale sono gli Stati Uniti, proprio perché il nostro interesse è lì che guarda, ma volendo citare un paese europeo, allora sicuramente amiamo la Svizzera, sia rispetto al design grafico che alla produzione editoriale.
